Microsoft Exchange is at the heart of most organisations’ email and collaboration systems, whether it’s hosted **on-premises**, delivered through **Exchange Online** in Microsoft 365, or deployed in a **hybrid environment** that combines both.

In Activate, a Microsoft Exchange connection allows the platform to directly integrate with your organisation’s Exchange environment to **automate and streamline mailbox and distribution list management**. Once connected, Activate can:

- **Manage Distribution Lists (DLs)** – Create, update, and remove membership as part of automated workflows.
- **Manage User Mailboxes** – Provision, update, and decommission mailboxes in line with user lifecycle events.
- **Manage Shared Mailboxes** – Create and configure shared mailboxes, including permissions, for teams and projects.

Activate supports **On-Premises Exchange**, **Exchange Online (EXO)**, and **hybrid deployments**, giving you flexibility no matter how your messaging environment is structured.

By securely connecting to Exchange, Activate brings these day-to-day email administration tasks into your IAM automation workflows — reducing manual effort, minimising errors, and keeping user access in sync with organisational changes.

## Deployment Types

Activate supports three main Microsoft Exchange deployment scenarios. The connection method and configuration steps vary depending on how your organisation’s Exchange environment is set up.

### On-Premises Exchange

Exchange Server hosted within your organisation’s own infrastructure and managed entirely by your IT team.

- **Typical for:** Organisations that prefer full control over their email environment or have compliance requirements that prevent cloud hosting.
- **Connection approach:** Uses on-premises Exchange Management Shell via PowerShell remoting.
- **Key consideration:** Ensure required network ports and authentication methods are enabled.

### Exchange Online (EXO)

Microsoft’s cloud-hosted Exchange service delivered as part of Microsoft 365.

- **Typical for:** Organisations moving away from on-premises infrastructure or operating fully in the cloud.
- **Connection approach:** Uses modern authentication with Microsoft Graph API and/or Exchange Online PowerShell module.
- **Key consideration:** Requires Azure AD app registration and appropriate API permissions.

### Hybrid Exchange

A combination of on-premises Exchange and Exchange Online, with directory synchronisation between the two.

- **Typical for:** Organisations transitioning to the cloud or running workloads split between on-premises and EXO.
- **Connection approach:** Usually connects to the authoritative source for mailbox and DL changes (often on-premises), with updates synchronised to EXO.
- **Key consideration:** Some management actions must be performed in the environment where the object is mastered.
