In some scenarios, you may need to define a **Composite Role**—a role whose membership is based on a combination of other existing roles. This allows you to build logical groupings of users, such as combining multiple departments or locations into a single, manageable role for notifications, approvals, or access control.

# Steps

1. **Open Activate Studio**
2. **Create a new Role** within the Roles section.
3. Add a **Members** parameter with a **Type** of Xml.
4. Open the **Members** parameter.
5. Use the interface to add **Roles** and logical **operators** (and, or, not) to define the membership logic.

# Use Cases

- A customer requires a role that includes all users who are members of both the **Auckland Location** and the **IT Department**—for example, to notify them of system outages.
- A customer wants a role that includes all users who belong to **Auckland** *or* **Wellington** locations.

# Example

In this example, a site uses subsidiary and department-based roles.
A **Composite Role** is created to include all members of a specific **Subsidiary Role** who belong to any of the listed **Locations**.
